According to Chinese tradition, there are seven basic emotions that cause most diseases in humans.
When there is total absence of these emotions or, on the contrary, there is a high degree of these emotions in people, we are susceptible to getting sick. At an emotional imbalance occurs, it can cause dysfunction of any of the organs of the human body, depending on the particular emotion. The heart and liver are the organs most affected by emotional imbalances.
Thus, joy is associated with the heart, and, although it is considered a beneficial emotion, excess or lack of joy could cause us heart problems palpitations, heart attack, insomnia, unclear thinking, mania). Anger is linked with liver and this emotion imbalance can cause us a headache, dizziness, irritability, feeling of suffocation and dry mouth, blood pressure is raised, pain in the costal region especially in the liver. Meanwhile fear is associated with kidney and causes us incontinence, frequent urination, lethargy, pain in the lower back, irregular menstruation, weakness in the legs. The grief is linked to the lung, so the imbalance of this emotion could cause us breathing problems, loss of appetite, skin problems, constipation and feeling of suffocation in the chest mainly. Worry is an emotion that is associated with the spleen, although it is also linked to heart; and it is that excess of this emotion can lead us to have problems like insomnia or other sleep disturbances, anxiety, memory loss, loss of appetite, palpitations, frights and mouth ulcers. The fright is linked to heart and, although this emotion is mainly caused by external factors beyond our control, may cause us frights, palpitations, cold sweats, panic attacks. Finally pensiveness is linked to lung and an excess of emotion we can produce this feeling of tightness in the chest, stagnation and depression.
It should be noted that although a particular emotion is associated with an organ may be affected not only the organ in question but some other lesser extent. Thus, the pensiveness, which is linked to lung, if you stay long as excess in our lives, could also affect the spleen, also causing us losses of appetite and digestive disorders. This is because the life force (qi) in our body is in constant motion and to present any form of obstruction due to emotional imbalance, the normal flow of this energy would be altered to affect other parts of our body.
